Officially the library was established on 13th January, 1966 by the Higher Education Department, Government of West Bengal. Initially, the Municipal Corporation, Chandernagore donated its old French Administrative records and French law books i.e. "Journal Official" and "Dalloze". The library was enriched by donation from eminent people and French Government. Every year, many research fellows use the library, approximate four hundred readers including foreigners. SPACE OF LIBRARY At present the library occupies four (4) rooms of the south block of main building and part of the first floor. The area of the library is around 115.26 sq.m. It lacks sufficient storage space and scientific organization. According to the expert reports of Mr. Jean Deloche and Mr. Louis Mezin, without an annexe building of library, this problem may not be solved. The library has a total collection of books of about 18000 (eighteen thousand) in three languages, 6300 in French, 5800 in English and the rest Bengali. The collection in French language is very rich, especially the part donated by the French Government, which consists of works of French Authors-a series of publications from 16th to 20th centuries, Corneille, Racine, Ronsard, Molière, Rousseau, Emile Zola , Gerard de Nerval, Balzac, Andre Gide, Albert Camus, Lamartine, Madame de Sevigne, Gustave Flaubert, Montaigne, Mousset, Marcel Proust, Spinoza, Tolstoi, Sainte Beuve, Victor Hugo, Voltaire, Saint Simon, Plutarque, Paul Claudel, P. L. Courier, Baudelaire, Paul Verlaine, Jacques Prévert and others.
